Jeep Wrangler vs Nissan Xterra

Some look for a car that gets them from point A to point B. Others look for a car that has either performance or luxury, and then there's you. While getting from point A to point B is important, what if point B is off the beaten path? What if point B is a snowy mountain top along winding, icy roads or a secluded cabin in the forest past a long, bumpy dirt trail? What if they tell you that you can't get there by car - it's too rough. You can just smile and nod if you have an off-road capable vehicle. While their vehicle gets stuck in the snow and mud, you have no problem going through mud, snow, or sand.

For someone like you, there are few choices. Two popular choices you have are either the proven Jeep Wrangler or the Nissan XTerra. Both are capable vehicles, but one is our favorite, and here’s why.

Horsepower

You're probably not looking to beat a Ferrari off the line, but if you're trekking up a nasty mountain, you need power. You need power to crawl over rocks, to get through the sand, and to go up a large grade. The Jeep Wrangler comes with 285 horsepower, more than enough for off-road trips, while the XTerra lags behind with 261hp, which makes it more suited for long city trips than rough terrain.

Four Wheel Drive

If you're off-roading, four wheel drive is a must. Driving in the snow with a rear wheel drive is like walking on ice in slippers. Good luck not breaking a bone! Thankfully the 2015 Jeep Wrangler comes standard with four wheel drive. Jeep knows why you're buying a Wrangler, unlike their competitor Nissan. The XTerra comes standard with rear wheel drive. Want that XTerra to be a 4x4? You're going to need to give the dealer something to the tune of an extra $2,000. What kind of off-road vehicle has standard rear wheel drive? The one that's still trying to catch up to Jeep.

Tires

Jeep knows that a strong off-road vehicle needs strong off-road tires, and that's why the 2015 Wrangler comes with all terrain tires while the XTerra comes with all season tires. You can decide which company has really designed their cars for off-road use. Jeep knows that when you're off the road, you might need to get to your spare tire quickly and easily. That's why they put a full sized matching tire on the back of the Wrangler. Nissan decided to put their non-matching spare tire under the chassis, not a convenient place if you're on a hill, or even on the side of the road – much less a ditch!

Jeep has been in the off-road business for over 50 years, so they've learned a lot about what makes a great all-terrain vehicle. If you're in the market why not stop by Crown Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chattanooga and test drive a Wrangler. We think you’ll agree with us that it’s the best choice!
