2017 Jeep Cherokee vs Jeep Grand Cherokee
Serving Chattanooga, Cleveland, East Ridge, Hixson, TN
SUVs are the ultimate package. They include off-road capabilities, comfortable driving, luxurious options, passenger space and room for cargo. Jeep lovers often wonder which model is the absolute best vehicle. Two of the top contenders are the Jeep Cherokee and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The latter is the larger model with the bigger engine, but there are plenty of subtle differences that make each better suited to specific needs. Comparing some of the major differences between the two models is the best way to see if either choice is superior for your situation.
Interior: Which has more room?
As the name might suggest, the 2017 Grand Cherokee is bigger in every dimension. While both SUVs are intended to seat five, the Grand Cherokee has more head, leg and shoulder room, with more cargo and storage space as well. As far as features go, the Cherokee is thoroughly comfortable, with optional upgrades that give you climate control, heated/cooled seats, keyless ignition, navigation and parking assistance. The climate control, keyless ignition and parking assistance are standard on the Grand Cherokee, and it can have all of the same upgrades, with an additional option for a rear seat DVD player. For the most part, the differences play out exactly as one would expect: the more expensive Grand Cherokee has more options and features.
Performance: Which has more power?
While these are both SUVs, the Cherokee is still a sport SUV, while the Grand Cherokee starts to cross the line into luxury. The Cherokee is much lighter, so a smaller engine gives it plenty of power and capacity for off-roading. The Cherokee utilizes a 2.4 L Inline 4 and 184 horsepower. The smaller engine specs let it run at an EPA-estimated 21 / 30 mpg*. The Grand Cherokee needs more power to move the larger frame. It comes with a standard 3.6L V6 diesel. A full 240 horsepower moves the vehicle, but it drops the efficiency to 19 / 26 mpg*. The other major performance difference between the two is in the drive differential. The Cherokee runs on front-wheel-drive while the Grand Cherokee is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle.
Safety: What features are included?
Safety is always a major concern, and it may help buyers choose between these models. The obvious size difference helps the Cherokee rate better in rollover tests, but it is not clearly the safer vehicle. Both models include traction control, side airbags, stability control and Antilock Brakes, and the Cherokee includes a standard anti-theft system. The alarm system is optional on the Grand Cherokee, as well as a number of off-road oriented upgrade packages. By and large, you don’t have to choose between these vehicles for safety, as they pack the same amazing features that include adaptive cruise control, automatic braking and the slew of driving assistance that is fast becoming standard.
