The 2016 Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover five-seater SUV that is unmistakably a Jeep from the round headlights, seven-slot grill, and boxy, upright shape to the major off-road performance of its Trailback model. The Renegade shares the Fiat 500L platform, albeit with significant differences owing to its short, wide body, unique features and technology designed for rugged off-road terrain. The cute but rugged SUV's mission is to be on-road friendly and off-road capable with room for adults in front and back, decent cargo space and fuel economy, and attractive pricing. The smaller turbocharged engine achieved 27 mpg* combined, and the larger engine rated 25 mpg* with FWD and 24 mpg* with 4WD according to Edmunds. The four levels of trim from basic Sport to Latitude, Limited, and off-road-ready Trailhawk start below $20,000** up to $27,000**. The Jeep Renegade was first introduced in 2015, and new for 2016 are a premium Beats 9-speaker audio system with a 6.5-inch subwoofer and a 506-watt amplifier and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Performance
The 2016 Jeep Renegade base engine is a 160 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 184-lb-ft of torque, matched to a six-speed manual transmission. A larger optional 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine can be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional with either engine, and there are settings for Mud, Snow, or Sand, including a hill-descent braking mode. The top-of-the-line Trailhawk mode is outfitted with bumpers to allow steeper angles of approach and descent, skid plates, tow hooks, an additional inch of ground clearance, and also a Rock mode to crawl at very low speeds. For city and suburban streets, the base powertrain and FWD are lighter, more direct and lower-riding than the Trailhawk, and the ride is well-cushioned by the suspension.
Interior
The interior of the 2016 Jeep Renegade is refined, essentially that of an Italian-built urban hatchback with clever Jeep flourishes to remind you of its heritage. Interior furnishings, dashboard and console are robust, with slightly oversized controls. Front row passengers will be happy with the Renegade's increased width whereas rear passengers might be a bit cramped in their legs. The optionally removable MySky roof panels will offer the sun and sky, with an optional power tilt for the front panel. Standard equipment includes power windows and locks, keyless entry, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel. Higher levels add air conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, remote engine start, leather upholstery, power-adjustable driver seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, and more.
Features
Standard features for the Renegade include a four-speaker sound system with USB and an auxiliary jack. Available features include the Uconnect control interface with touchscreen, satellite radio, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a six-speaker audio system, upgraded driver information display, navigation, HD radio, Uconnect Access, WiFi hotspot, voice texting, and an 115-volt power outlet.
Safety
The 2016 Jeep Renegade comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock brakes, front side, side curtain, and driver knee airbags, and hill start assist. A rearview camera is standard all other trim levels except Sport. Safety features available include rear parking sensors, rear cross-path alert system, blind spot monitoring system, frontal collision warning system, lane departure warning system, and lane keeping assist. Unconnect Access offers stolen vehicle location services, remote door locking, and emergency and roadside assistance. No collision test information was available for the 2016 Renegade. Edmunds brake testing showed an excellent-for-its-class stopping distance from 60 mph of 116 ft, whereas the Trailhawk took 135 ft to stop.
